Omakau Camping Ground Review

Central Otago District Council engaged Xyst to undertake a comprehensive review of the Omakau Camping Ground to determine the most suitable approach for its future management. There have been concerns regarding the Camping Ground’s financial performance and the difficulty of recruiting staff in this rural area.

The review explored the Camping Ground’s current operations within the broader tourism context to ensure it remains viable and aligned with community needs.

As part of this work, Xyst analysed income and expenditure trends, assessed external market influences, and evaluated a range of potential management options. The objective was to identify solutions that support long term sustainability without placing undue pressure on the Council or ratepayers.

Xyst provided a comprehensive report with a recommended management approach that will guide Council decision-making on the best way forward to ensure the Camping Ground remains a valued asset for the District.
